Easy Steps to Repair Your Credit

Since I spent over twenty years working in banking and finance, most people are shocked to find out that like them, I have also struggled to keep my credit score in tip top shape.  The truth is that I am no different from anyone.  Life happens, and sometimes you find yourself with a credit score that is lower than what you would like.  When I tell people this, they always want to know how I repair my own credit.

Whenever I am working on credit restoration, whether for myself or a client, the first thing I do is get a copy of the credit reports from each of the three credit bureaus.  You will probably surprised at how many errors that you find.  As an example, I once had a friend who was forced into a medical bankruptcy.  Since her bankruptcy, she had not bothered to check her credit report because she knew that all of her debts had been included.  When I convinced her that she needed to do this, she was shocked and horrified to find that these accounts were being reported as open collections.  After getting these errors corrected, her credit score went up.

The number one thing I recommend to people looking to improve their credit scores is to work as hard as they can to get rid of credit card bills.  Many people do not understand that simply paying your credit cards on time does not mean that they are not negatively impacting your credit score.  Carrying balances on your credit score lowers it in almost all cases.  The reason for this is that other than how you pay your bills, the ratio of credit you are using versus what you have available to you is the second most important factor in determining your credit score.  For the best possible credit score, aim to get your balances down to 20% or less of your total credit line.

Helping Your Child With Credit Restoration

Just when you think you have the established title of “Empty Nester”, here comes your daughter with her tail between her legs, and broke from running up tens of thousands of dollars of credit card debt, and she cannot even afford her apartment anymore. Credit restoration is not always easy when you are trying to help someone accomplish this goal, as they have to be on board and have a like mind to achieve the objective of restoring credit, and keeping it in a favorable light. Getting back to basics is the first step in paying of overpowering debt.

Sit down with your adult child and let them explain how they came to this point in their life, and reserve your own personal judgment as this will only create a negative situation that will only throw up an emotional wall preventing them from wanting to move forward. Explain to them that you are not there to tell them how to live, but facilitate the process of getting them out of debt. Unfortunately today’s young adults are taught a very young age that credit cards are just a part of life, and most people will be in debt their whole lives. Probably a little realistic education in what a normal and functional life is like living within one’s financial means.

In order to restore credit for your child, they will have to agree to a monthly financial plan that will keep them on a tight spending diet. Writing out the plan and having them read it over and sign it will help them realize the severity of what lavish spending has done to their lives. Helping them stay on target by having essentially an allowance from their paycheck they can spend on necessities only will drive home the reality of the situation, and cause them some discomfort when they cannot rush out and buy a latte, and a new blouse because they feel down.

Should You Hire A Credit Repair Company Or Do It Yourself?

Many people who need credit restoration wonder if they should attempt to do it themselves or hire a credit repair company.  While many credit repair companies would have you believe that it is next to impossible to repair your own credit.  This is actually not the case!  Do it yourself credit repair is not only possible; it is one of the best options for credit repair.

While credit report repair services can save you time, the reality is that you have the ability to do a much better job.  Since most credit repair companies charge you by the month, they are really not all that financial incentive’s to work quickly on your credit report.  Is the length of time that it takes to repair your credit important to you? If so, you may want to consider getting the education that you need and repairing your own credit.  Chances are that you will be able to generate much better results than any company.

You can also complete a much more through credit restoration than any company who simply offers credit report disputing.  This is because to completely repair your credit, you need to open new accounts that have only a positive history.  Also, sometime credit report disputing is not enough to clean up credit report errors.  Sometimes you need to move on to advanced strategies like debt validation and disputing directly with the original creditor.  Most credit restoration companies either do not offer these services or do offer them but charge outrageous fees for them.
