If you are an OAP who is looking to purchase travel insurance, there are all kinds of things that you need to ensure that your potential travel insurance for senior citizens policy covers.
Apart from ensuring that you are with a reputable and reliable company, who pays out fairly and without drama, the most important thing is to ensure that you have adequate health cover. This should cover any existing medical conditions, either included in the main policy, or as a transparently explained extra (that obviously may include an excess premium). When traveling abroad it is important that your insurance provider is easily contacted, should an emergency situation occur. If you suddenly need an urgent operation in another country, you don’t want to spend five days trying to contact your insurance provider. Many people also want a policy that covers any important medication or supplements that you may lose.
Also consider your cover during any potential travel inconvenience. On a simple level, this could include your bags going missing or being delayed for a day. Worse still, your actual flight may be delayed or cancelled, and you may be liable to pay for the majority, if not all, of the extra accommodation costs (depending on the airline’s conditions).
A third factor is that some of your possessions could be stolen. Especially if you are carrying expensive equipment such as laptops, SLR cameras, or jewelry, you will want to know if the insurance covers the replacements. Bear in mind that many travel policies ask you to pay extra for cover on such items. If you want them to be covered you may have to provide specific details of the items at the time of purchasing the policy. Also remember that most insurance providers will require a police report as proof that the item has been stolen, before they pay out. Although getting a report in a country where you don’t speak the language can be a pain, that is unfortunately how the system tends to work.
